A Photo from My Life

One thing I love when I read blogs is the little personal touches people put in. It’s not just about the cosmetics love and banter, the reviews and swatches. Whether it be photos of family and friends or a beloved pet. A fancy background design or perhaps just a list of their favourite movies. I like the little window into peoples lives and feeling that I get to know them better through these as well as their writing. With this being the world wide web and all I know everyone has to be very careful in what they say and what they post. Not to give too much away about who they are and what they do. It can be a scary place. Also on top of this people can be so mean. Especially on places like Youtube. Seeing some of the posts that my favourite gurus get can hack me off. Although I want to shout at these dumb asses I don’t respond to these idiots as I know it’s never wise to feed the trolls. It just annoys me that they have nothing better to do and that they are spoiling something I enjoy.

Any way that aside, when blog reading, for me it’s nice to come across a funny picture or something cute that makes me smile.

Therefore I thought I would post a photo of mine that always makes me smile. In fact I think I will post a picture every now and then under the title “A Photo from My Life”. I’ll put an image up with perhaps a little explanation of what it is and why it makes me laugh or it could be just something daft.

Ideally I would like to start a Tag, but I’ve never done that before so not sure how it will take off. I’ll ask anyway, if it doesn’t work, what the hell.
- EDIT consider this a TAG for anyone reading or following!

So I ask you, if you are still reading, to post an photo from your life. Something that is perhaps special to you, makes you laugh or for any reason what so ever, you decide. So post it under the title “A Photo from My Life”. Let me know in the comments that you’ve done this so I can go view. Thanks.

So here is mine. This was taken on holiday when I was tiny wee as you can see. It’s me, my dad and my brother. Now it is a shame that my mum is not in the picture but as she was the one taking it I still feel that she IS in it. I love the early eighties clothes, the cheeky face brothers my big brother is pulling and the fact that my glasses are on squint! I am lucky enough to say that I had a happy childhood with a strong family life. Our holidays were always until Britain until I was about eleven or twelve, my parents just couldn't afford to go abroad. Scarborough, Blackpool and Great Yarmouth were the places we headed. Caravan parks, ice cream and donkey rides! You can see the old school curved edges on it! I love it.

I also wanted to say a big thank you to all the lovely people following me and to anyone that has left me comments. Thanks for the warm welcome into this blogging world. You rock.

Lippy Refind Plan - Rimmel

After being reminded by another blog about an old favourite Rimmel lippy I thought I would get digging about the bag of lipsticks I have. I wanted to see what other Rimmel numbers I have in there that haven't been aired in a while. In fact when I started to look through I realised how many lipsticks I own that I don't use. That in mind I am going to give myself a little plan of action. Usually when I am putting the old make up on I start with the eyeshadow and then reach for the lippy which tends to be a bog standard nude. So instead I'm going to work through the lip products I have and use each one until I've covered them all (I don't have that many honest). Therefore today I am wearing this "lasting Finish Intense Wear Lipstick" in Asia number 77 (the flash of the camera makes it a little lighter than what it actually looks like). I think I might actually try it as a blush too.

So I'm curious folks, how many lipsticks do you own?

Saving Kat Von D

At the beginning of the year I was in the states. We don’t have Sephora stores over here in the UK and I pray to the Make Up Gods that they open a store at some point. It's cosmetic heaven, I could easily live there for a week or two. Hopefully they will reach this shore and in my city. I lost count of the amount of times I went into these stores. I spent a few dollars in there too.

My favourite purchases from across the pond are without a doubt my Kat Von D eyeshadow palettes. They were a new range to me (obviously I knew who KVD was) so I think that helped my love. I love the colours, the quality and the packaging is lovely too. It's highly pigmented and easily blended. However as soon as I got them I was thinking “but what happens when I run out“. Now this is silly as I have a friend in the States who is more than happy to go purchase anything I need and post it to my door. I still however find myself “saving them for best”. Do you guys do this? Keep your favourite or expensive make up for as long as possible by not really using it?

I used to do this with perfumes. I had cheaper everyday stuff that was "ok" and expensive nicer perfumes that I adored that I only wore now and then. I then realised how silly this was. Why have these wonderful things and not use them? I now only wear perfume that I love. Regardless of the price or where I’m going, I will wear it. So I’m going to try and apply this to the make up I have too. What’s the point in having it if I’m not using it? So today, even though I don’t have any exciting plans I’m wearing some of my Kat Von D and I’m happy.

So do you find yourself saving things for special occasions only? If so what is it and why?

Products used on eyes -
Kat Von D eyeshadows palette in Ludwig - Colours Clay, Dowtown, Baroque, and a tiny touch of Leather. Mac Liquid last liner in Point Black.

Who is this George of Asda?

After reading "Lily loves Lola" blog (link will be at the bottom of the post. I don't know how to shorten the link to make it small and clickable, answers on a postcard please). I was reminded that I own a couple of nail polishes from George at Asda. A dark grey and a yellow. I bought them a while back but haven’t really used them all that much. So I thought it was time to give one of them an airing. So here it is. As you can see it’s bright spanking yellow.

If you do go looking for this in your local aisles it’s number 16 and the name is Buttercup. Let’s face it though this colour is bound to stand out so you are not likely to miss it or need the number for it. Now considering these are only £1.50 they are not all that bad. The bottles are small but hey like I said they are £1.50. Quality wise they are ok to “meh“, it’s a little streaky when it goes on and needs two coats without a doubt but not too shabby at all. With the Halloween season coming up these would perhaps be handy if you were wanting to get a colour to match a costume. Perhaps you are not too keen on bright/dark colours and don’t want to waste cash on a colour you’ll never wear again after the 31st. Or maybe you are just starting to play around with nail polishes and want a whole lot of colours without breaking the bank. These might be the polishes for you. All in all I think they are cute, cheap and fun. And handy to pick up with the weekly shop. I think I will be checking more out at the check out.

A Lippy by any other name.....

Ok, so I feel like I am constantly going on about being poor right now. Soz folks, I do apologise for this I don‘t mean to be a moan. I will be a happy chipper bunny from now on. Positive thinking all the way.
As I am quite new to Blogger I keep finding all these wonderful blogs as I search around. With that comes rave reviews and therefore wonderful products I want to get my mitts on. It’s frustrating not being able to go out and get all these fantastic things that you ladies recommend. I have a wish list the length of my arm for things I want to try out. If I put them all on my blogs I think the internet would crash!
Now with all that said I have found that there is a benefit of not being able to get new products into my make up bag. I’ve started using what’s in there! Tee hee. Lipsticks especially seem to have been completely under used. I do tend to go more for a dramatic eye so have gotten into a rut of just slipping on a pale/neutral lip. For me I either seem to chose that light colour and once every now and then go for a dark. Now as I said before in a previous post I’m never going to do the MAC black lip that’s coming out as I would just look daft so a deep colour is as close as I’m going to go. Plus I know a berry lips is trendtastic this coming season. What better time to paint on a “new” old dark lip. This is an old Boots 17 colour I found in a bunch of lipsticks. I have no idea when I got it and if they even make the colour any more (the website certainly didn’t have it). I also have it on in the hair cut photos. I quite like it and got a few compliments while wearing it too which can’t be bad.

So my questions to you folks are -
Do you have any cheap and cheerful beauty tips for me?

Have you rediscovered a product recently?

And, What are your most lusted after products at the moment? I believe the term is “lemming” if I am to keep up with the young ones!
Hope you guys have had a great weekend.

Strictly Mad

This isn't cosmetics related just a wee shout out to anyone who is addicted to Strictly Come Dancing as I am. I will quite happily admit that I get so hyper about this show. Months before it I start thinking about when it'll hit the screen. There isn't much on telly that I watch to be honest, a handful of good shows (CSI to name one). They tend to be spend out through out the year and Strictly is my Autumn/Winter favourite. I thought tonights show was excellent and the standard stupidly high. It's going to be a cracker of a competition.

On the uber girlie side I do love Ooooowwwing and Ahhhhing at the dresses. And as for the make up. Well lets just say I would in heaven playing with the kits. Looking forward to the Latin on Saturday night!

So who else has Strictly Fever?

Man, I feel like a haircut!

So I finally got my hair cut today. I'd be putting it off for as long as possible due to the lack of funds situation but I could hold off no longer. Instead of going to my regular hairdresser I had to go for a slightly cheaper option. Still not cheap as chips but not the usual £100+ I spend getting it cut and dyed. I had home dyed it (see previous post) so it was just a shaping up and trim I wanted. I still want to grow my hair really long, it’s a decent length now but I want it uber long. It's amazing how getting your hair done can make you feel so much better. I swear I walk taller once I’m out the door. To look at it it’s not all that different, as you can see, it sure does feel it though. It’s lighter and no more dry ends! Plus there are a good few more layers in it giving it some shape. Bottom line, I’m happy with it. I guess I was a bit scared to go somewhere new. I love my hairdresser and don’t like going elsewhere. When I was a teenagers one of my very first trips to the hairdresser was a disaster. My cousin was a hairdresser so she used to cut it for me so I wasn’t used to having to go into a salon. I was young and a little timid of all the shiny mirrors and styled people. I took a photo of a cut I loved. It’s hard to describe but was cut to the chin at the front and shorter at the back. Kinda graduated bob kinda not. Any way, long story short I came out with hair cut to ABOVE my eyebrows. Now I have a round face so this short crop was horrific. I felt like a man with it. As soon as I got out of the doors I burst out carrying (I was 16). I was too young and too intimidated to scream my head off at the person who attacked my hair. So now when I find a stylist I love I stick with them. However the new guy today was friendly and did exactly what I asked. Result!

So want hair nightmares have you gone through?

But would you really?

So I know that a lot of people are talking about the new MAC Black collection. There’s lots of reviews and blogs kicking about going over the products. I guess my post is more of a query really. I was reading a blog by Unicorn that shows a wearable take on the black lip look. (Edit, I'll add the link to her blog to this) I think it stunning and if I had the products would definitely give it a try. Now I am a fan of a dark, dark lip. I love deep reds and purples. Anything that packs a punch but I wouldn’t dare go for full on black. I’d look stupid. My question is would you? Would you really?

Now I know that promo photos are there to advertise and to inspire. That it is all about being creative. And I’m not coming out with the “it’s not wearable” moan. That bugs me. I would never say that. I studied Fine Art, I’m a painter (who doesn’t pick the paint brush up enough) so I’m no stranger to the creative side of things. I get that you take what you want from it and make it work for you. As you would fashion. So once again my question is, would you wear a black lip? If so, how would you make it work for you? If not, how will you make it work for you, will you adapt it like Unicorn? Do you not care at all? I’m curious people.

Lights, Camera, Inspiration

I love movies. Hopelessly addicted to the big screen. I adore sitting down to watch a film, the lights dimming and suddenly you are pulled into a story. I’ll admit going to the cinema these days is a little less enjoyable. People don’t seem to be able to understand I didn’t pay money to see them playing with their mobile phones or to listen to them talking to their mates. If people want to sit and catch up with their friends I do wish they would chose not to do that in the cinema. It may be getting older but I’m finding it much easier to tell people to shut the hell up nowadays. I used to just mutter under my breath.

(Sorry this goes into a little rant)

That aside I will pretty much go and see any type of film. Although slasher horror movies are not my cup of tea really. I’m usually on the madman killers side, you never care about the dumb ass characters. My favourite who really cares movie was Hostel. Three backpackers head to a Slovakian city in the middle of nowhere as they are told hot women live there that will sleep with them. Obviously I’m loving them already. The best part about this, for me, is that they start off in Amsterdam! Because obviously there is no hot women there, especially not ones that are attracted to men. No fun to be had there at all. Best go to the arse end of nowhere for some. Really? The kids shows they put on in the afternoons are far scarier. But hey, whatever blows your hair back.

Any way the whole put of this blog was to talk about movies inspiring make up! Tee hee Gone off topic a bit there. When I think of films of recent years that made me want to get the MU brushes out the two that spring to mind are Chicago and Moulin Rouge. Fifth element sticks in my mind too. I mean the whole look of these made me WOW! So I was curious what movies inspired you? Is there a favourite that comes to mind? Some silver screen Goddess you wanted to copy?

Let me know what you love.

Another Hair Change

I decided to dye my hair yesterday it really needs a cut but I don't have the cash for that at the mo. So instead the colour changed. I only ever use a semi permanents now as a few years back I used a full on dark brown dye and ended up with jet black hair. I hated it. It took over 3 hours in Toni and Guy and a hell of a lot of cash to sort it out. I never want to be in that position again. Last month I went for a bit of a change and tried a reddish colour. I liked it but wasn't keen on the way it was washing out. Faded red is never nice. I had bought both colour dyes at the same time as A) I thought the red might not work out the best long term and B) there was an offer on to buy two for a cheaper price! I really would love my hair to be red. I used to dye it red for years and loved it but it's so much hassle. The colour I would want is Nicole Kidman's in Moulin Rouge. However at the moment I can't afford to go to my hairdresser to get it done. There's no way I would want to do it at home as it wouldn't look as good plus bugger having to redo it every few weeks and having my bathroom look like a crime scene and staining all the towels. It's just too much upkeep. So I've gone dark brunette, problem is so has my skin! I did all the usual steps (vaseline round the head etc etc) after doing a hundred at home jobs I know what to do but Jeez it was messy. The dye literally cut through the Vaseline and stained my face, my arms and shoulders too. It’s slightly better today after much scrubbing but long sleeved high neck top it is! Other than that I quite like the colour. I do have pale, pale skin which I occasionally give a boost of colour with a fake tan but it doesn’t make me look ghostly.
The two colours I used were -
L’Oreal Casting Crème Gloss - Dark Brown
And the same make but in Black Cherry

So do you have any hair changes of late? Or any hair horror stories of the past? What would be your ideal hair colour if you had an on call colourist?

Orange almost Halloween nails

I was thinking about Halloween today. There are so many great Halloween looks popping up on the internet it makes me want to try out so many things. So I thought I would perhaps do some sort of quick little nail design. I grabbed a bright orange Barry M nail paint and got to work. However once I put this lovely colour on I couldn’t bring myself to paint anything over the top of it. I do love this colour and even though it is highly pigmented it is also still a bit sheer. Two thin coats are more than enough. You can see in the photos that my nail tips can still be seen, although that’s only on close inspection. I seem to keep forgetting about this polish when I go to pick one so it’s a little happy nail joy when I find it amongst the other colours I have. Perhaps nearer Halloween I will try it again. With a purple or green tip, or with a little black bat or cat painted on. We shall see. Until then I’m happy with my almost Halloween nails.

I also dyed my hair a dark brown colour today. Not only has it dyed my hair but also half of my skin too. More on that tomorrow though.

Purple Eyed Inspiration

I like all colours of eyeshadow and pretty much wear them all. I love colour so I tend not to shy away from anything, there's nothing too bright or too bold. Purple however is not one I reach for very often. Some people shy away for the fear of looking like you've been punched about the place and perhaps that has played into it a little. Any way after seeing Natalya post a lovely purple tutorial (http://filthygorgeousmakeup.blogspot.com/2009/09/new-youtube-series-best-colours-for.html) I thought I would give this colour a bit of attention. Overall I'm quite happy with the look. It's light enough to wear in the day and not look too OTT and I could perhaps do a night version (in fact I might try a darker night look soon). Plus it gave me an excuse to use my Kat Von D palette which I adore. So perhaps I will have to weave a bit of purple into my make up.
So what colours do you stay away from and why?

Clinique - freebie follow on - Clarifying Lotion

I blogged previously about getting a free gift with a Clinique and not using the products provided. After trying out the lippy, and liking it more than I thought I would, I found another one of these goodies tucked away in a drawer. A little bottle of Clarifying Lotion. Now I've never used this product before so tried it out for the first time last night and boy do you feel it working! It kinda stings but in a good way if that makes any sense. Now I tend to mix my skin care up. There are a couple of things I tend to stick to but I have no strict plan of action. Any way I've decided to give this a trial run. I know Clinique are known for their great skin care range so I'm hoping for the best. I really want to try out their foundations too at some point. Fingers crossed to seeing good results. I don't know how long to give this try out. It might just update weekly to say how things are going.
Anyone out there used this product before or a Clinique fan in general.

Old Favourite - No7 Stay Perfect Nail, Oyster

Years back I remember falling in love with No7's oyster nail polish. I adored it and wore it every chance I could. However once I went to art college nice nails were a thing of the past. With hands constantly in oil paint and white spirit nail polish was only ever slicked on for a night out.

Any way a good while back I got one of those £5 off vouchers at Boots and thought I would get myself a bottle. I was a bit disappointed to be honest. The colour wasn't what I remembered and it seemed to chip and almost look rubbed off at the tips within a day. Considering it's called Stay Perfect I wasn't a happy bunny. I thought prehaps it was just that colour but I got another (voucher tastic! Iced Mocha) and this seemed to happen again. However, as I mentioned in a previous blog, a friend suggested adding an extra layer of colour then another top coat 24hrs after putting on the usual base, two colour layers and top coat. It seems to be working so I finally get use out of these and as I'm job hunting these are "Interview friendly" colours.

Is there any old favourites of yours that you have rediscovered recently?
Have a great weekend.

UnGRAPEful Gifts

I’m not really a sucker for freebies. I do like it when you get little added extras with your purchases of course but usually when a free gift is being offered I’m not all that interested (Edit - I should say I love a free gift but don't let it sway me unless I'm intending to buy in the first place). I never really want or need what is on offer. However that being said the first time I went to New York last year I did go into Macy’s and ended up at the Clinique counter. I was hovering around the Benefit stands eying the prices to see if there was any saving on the Doller V Pound and turned round to be greeted by a lovely chatty sales girl talking about Clinique. My friend bought some products and they had a free gift offer on so I thought why the hell not I‘m on holiday. I can’t even remember what I got free, 2 make up bags which have come in handy but product wise not a clue. So any way I was going through my lipsticks tonight and found this. It’s called “A Different Grape” hence the title of the post.

I hadn’t even really looked at it let alone really tried it. It’s not a colour I would normally go for but I’m kinda liking it. I want to change up my lipsticks as I tend to go with the same tones all the time. Light pale neutral /goldy colours or a red lip now and then. I know this coming season is all about berry and dark lips so now is as good a time as any to try something new. Whatcha think? Any free gifts you've been given that have turned out to be a surprise?

TAG - Life Overhaul - Outs and Ins

Computergirl’s tag - Life Overhaul - Outs and Ins

This is more blogging than MU related.

Starting with the Outs to get rid of them asap.

Outs

Worrying about being unemployed. I’m currently not working and hating it. It’s the first time I have not had a job since I was 13. What with the financial state the world is in jobs are not hard to come by and I’ve been worrying silly over it. I need to chill out and keep positive.

Buying the next big thing. It has to be said that there is one benefit to the lack of funds situation. I’ve had to stop buying things as soon as I want them. I simply can’t afford it anymore. Not that I think it’s bad to treat yourself to what you want. After all, when I was working, I was working hard for my pay and should buy myself lovely things now and then. My point is, now that I have to wait it out to purchase, it means I no longer purchase on a whim. Get suckered by fancy packaging or gimmicky sales. Even when I do have cash in my pocket again I will now wait it out to see if I actually really want something or if it’s a passing fancy.

Eating badly and not exercising. Not working means I’m seeing the same four walls a lot. Energy is a bit low as is will power. Sometimes I’m eating rubbish, sometimes I’m forgetting to eat. I need a plan of action and to get myself into gear.

Worrying in general. I worry way too much about everything. The amount of sleepless nights I have had stressing about things that have never happened. It’s just silly. I need to stop and have a more Sod It attitude.

Ins

Being more organised at home. Neat and tidy is the way to go. It’s funny as when I work I have everything in it’s place but at home I keep a whole bunch of stuff I don’t need.

Focusing on positive things and being thankful for what I have.

Be creative. It’s been a while since I did any proper painting or writing. I keep starting things and putting them down. I think I need to start small and build up to get me back into the swing of things.

Cooking! I forgot how much I love to cook. Have made some cracking meals recently and a chocolate mousse which was just all kinds of yummy, thank you Nigella Lawson (although this may have to be made less to fit in with the Out above). In fact I’m off to make something to munch on now.

So if you have got this far in reading consider yourself tagged and do your own. Post a link to your Outs and Ins or just pop them right here in the comments so I can read them too.
Have a great day folks.

Corset fun

After seeing a fantastic corset inspired nail polish design from Sasa in the Illamasqua comp I just had to try it out. Obviously it's my version of it so it's a little different but not by much. I also only painted it on one nail. Firstly as I wasn't sure how it would turn out and secondly as I felt on every nail it might be a bit too much. I'm kinda feeling it though.

Playing around, interview nails and silly me

I played with a few colours the other day. Trying to use up my 120 palette in any way possible. I honestly don't know if I like it. I think I'm perhaps a wee bit too pale to pull it off. Would have to do this look once I tanned up a bit I think. Still think the quality is too poor for me to use properly though. I think I could try stuff out with it and then go buy dupe colours.

I'm currently job hunting at the moment, and with the way things are you can imagine how much fun that is. Any way with interviews to be done walking in with hot pink nails is prehaps not the way to go. I have a couple of No7 colours that I really like but never really use as they seem to chip and wear off within a day on me. A friend posted a tip she read about, basically it's a lot of layers of nail polishes but I thought I would give it a bash. I did alter it though. So I did one layer of base coat, two of colour, one of top coat, then the following day another layer of colour and top coat. It seems strange as you aren't supposed to put colour on top of a top coat. However so far it's done the business. Added the final stage on Tuesday and all is shiny and well still. The colour above is Iced Mocha if anyone is interested.
Oh and for some reason I keep thinking today is Wednesday. So much so that I missed Pixiwoo's BlogTV. Will watch the recordings though.

Barbie loves MAC inspired

I love when you see something and think "I just HAVE to try that". Inspired by the MAC visuals and Sam Chapmans Vid I tried may hand at a green/black/pink combo. I have to say I really liked the results. I did a paled down version (above) which I've worn several times since. Then a bigger brighter bolder attempt with false lashes. I also tried a blue/black/yellow mix which I wasn't as keen on but still fun to try. Thinking it's time to try out a new combo. ;)

It's early in the morning and I can't sleep, so I thought I would blog.
At a night out this weekend I thought I would try a brown and black look. Brown over the lid and black along the lash line plus LOTS of liner and mascara! I thought I would add a tiny bit of black glitter along the lash just to try it out too. After saying I wasn't keen on glitter I seem to have been adding it in here and there to try and make it work for me. I have to say I kinda liked the finished look, teamed it with a nude/goldy lip and I was out the door. I did have to keep topping up the waterline but I always do. Really want to get my hands on a Lord & Berry black liner as I have read that it's waterproof and non transferable. Once I have the pennies it will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine. That and a whole load of other make up treats!

Green Lightening

Now I know I said that I wasn't a glitter girl but I did try a bit of it today. Change it up a bit I guess. Any way, I got a couple of glitter liners at Christmas which I've only used once.

I used a No7 pencil liner, metallic green, from their new range and add the glitter liner on top. I've got black glitter I might try out tomorrow.

Goldfinger

I'm not really a glitter girl. Eye shadow, nail polish, either or, glitter is not really my thing. With that said one of my favourite nail polishes is China Glaze's Ruby Pumps. It's just stunning. Instant glam and all types of pretty. And of course makes me think of the Wizard of Oz.

I'm also adoring Barry M's gold polish. It's not so much glittery but it's shiny and I likes it.
